Myth of Grain Allergy – Truth or Question of Quality?

Time and again, you hear: "Wolves don't eat grain – so my dog shouldn't either!" Sounds logical, but it's a superficial thought.

The Dog Is Not a Wolf – And That's Crucial

Dogs have lived alongside humans for at least 15,000 years – fossil finds, including the joint grave of a human and dog in Bonn-Oberkassel (approx. 14,000 years old), clearly demonstrate this close connection. During this time, their digestive system has fundamentally changed: dogs produce significantly more amylase than wolves – an enzyme that breaks down starch. This was scientifically proven in a study by Uppsala University (Axelsson et al., Nature 2013). Dogs are therefore biologically capable of digesting grain. A direct comparison with wolves simply doesn't apply here.

So Where Do Allergies Come From?

If grain itself isn't a problem – why do so many dogs react to it? The answer lies not in the grain itself, but in the quality of what ends up in the food.

  • Low-quality grain – Instead of whole grain, often only husks, hulls, and waste products end up in the food. These are difficult to digest and strain the intestines.
  • Pesticides & chemical contamination – Heavily contaminated grain from industrial agriculture can permanently irritate the immune system. The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) publishes annual monitoring reports on residues in food and feed.
  • Combination with substitutes – Not real meat, but meat meal from questionable sources, further overburdens the body.

A concrete example: A whole cooked potato provides starch, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Potato starch in feed, however, is an industrially processed byproduct – with significantly lower nutritional value, but still legally declarable as "potato."

Allergy Tests – Why They Often Mislead

Allergy tests cannot distinguish between individual triggers in a complete product. If a food contains poultry protein, wheat, soy meal, and colorings, and the dog reacts – the test often shows everything as positive. Which substance is the actual trigger remains unclear. This leads to dogs being switched to "grain-free" food – which can contain equally low-quality ingredients. The actual problem remains unsolved.

The Grandparents' Argument

In the past, dogs often received table scraps – potatoes, bread, meat scraps, vegetables. Severe food allergies were much rarer then. A possible explanation: The food itself was less contaminated with pesticides, antibiotics, and preservatives. Whether the grain itself or the overall burden of the feed is the trigger often cannot be clearly determined in individual cases – but the quality of the ingredients plays a decisive role.

The Declaration Tricks of the Industry

What's on the packaging isn't always what you expect – and that's often legal. According to the EU Feed Labelling Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 767/2009), ingredients can be declared under collective terms:

  • "Cereals" can include wheat bran, husks, or flour waste – not necessarily nutritious whole grain
  • "Sugar" can mean molasses or sugar beet pulp
  • "Potato" can be pure potato starch – without vitamins, without fiber

If you want to be sure, look for open declaration – where each ingredient is listed individually with its quantity.

Conclusion: Quality Decides – Not the Grain

Grain is not automatically the enemy. Low-quality, chemically contaminated, or poorly declared food is the problem – whether with or without grain.

What you should really look out for:

  • Open declaration – every ingredient listed individually
  • Real meat as the first and quantitatively largest ingredient
  • No use of fillers such as cellulose, sugar beet pulp, or soy meal
  • No artificial colorings, flavors, or preservatives
